Apricot, peach and cherry blossom trees flower in spring. The cherry blossom, also called sakura, is an important symbol for the Japanese people.
Sakura trees have always been considered a symbol of short-lived beauty. It is also a symbol of samurai, another incarnation of the idea that life is beautiful and short.
The blooming sakura also announces the rice planting season. Japanese people used to believe that gods lived in the cherry blossom trees and left offerings at the trees’ bases, while drinking sake of course.
Hanami is the viewing of these beautiful sakura trees. During this time, Japanese people meet up under cherry blossom trees with family and friends. They spend some time together, share a picnic and enjoy the short-lived beauty that is sakura.
