Last Saturday, just like the previous years on the last Saturday of July, Japanese people enjoyed watching big fireworks over Tokyo Bay for Hanabi Taikai.

 

Hanabi Taikai is a big fireworks festival that has taken place every year since fireworks first appeared in Japan during the 18th century. The festival’s purpose was to mourn the dead and entertain the living. This somewhat small celebration quickly turned into a full-fledged festival.

 

Bit by bit, rivalries between artists to make the best fireworks for Hanabi Taikai gave rise to sensational fireworks competitions. After fading in popularity, the Japanese have experienced a rekindled love for summer fireworks.

 

In China and Thailand, people release glowing lanterns into the sky while making a wish. They believe that their troubles will go away with the wind. This tradition is quite impressive as you can see in the video below.
